Instructions: BeeHaven Bee House

The BeeHaven is a summer gardener's introduction to raising solitary leafcutter bees.

Summer leafcutter bees are generalist pollinators who will help you grow more legumes, squash, melons, tomatoes, peppers, and sunflowers!

Summer Leafcutter BeeHaven Kit includes:
  1. BeeHaven Bee House (2" H x 2" W x 8" D) with instructions printed inside label
  2. 12 BeeTubes in 6mm size for summer leafcutter bees
  3. When purchased at a nursery: Certificate for 100 leafcutter bee cocoons*
  4. When purchased directly from Crown Bees: Includes 100 leafcutter bee cocoons.**

Instructions

  • Select a location that faces S to SE, morning sun is optimal to warm the bees so they can begin to fly. Provide afternoon shade in hot locations that are consistently above 90F/32C.
  • Install bee house on a sturdy wall or fence, at eye level for easy observation of bee activity, about 5ft (1.5m) from the ground to protect from pests and predators.
  • Locate the house within 300ft (100m) of your flowers.
  • Position your bee house away from birdhouses and bird feeders.
  1. Install a nail or screw for mounting the BeeHaven house on a post, fence or wall. 
  2. Chill the shipping bag of leafcutter bee cocoons in your fridge for 15 minutes, open the bag and pour the chilled cocoons and sleepy bees on top of the paper tubes in the BeeHaven.
  3. Mount the BeeHaven bee house on the nail or screw.
  4. Do not place leafcutter cocoons in direct sunlight.
